The Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band is preparing to sound off the year in style.

On November 30, the band will be holding an end of year concert.

Musical director Catherine Anderson said the concert would be a culmination of their year’s work.

‘‘It will be a light-hearted, community-focused concert.

‘‘We will be showcasing what we’ve been working on throughout the year.

‘‘We competed in the Otago Southland Provincial contests in April and then in the Canterbury Provincial contest in September.

‘‘We came first in the C grade in the Otago one and we came third in the Canterbury one, so some of the music will be from those contests.

‘‘We’ve also got a couple of soloists performing, one of which won the whole section at the Canterbury contest.’’

She said the band, comprising 20 regular members, have had a busy year.

‘‘We’re ramping up to taking part in the national contest next year, which is in Christchurch in July.

‘‘The plan was to do the regional ones this year in a way of building up to the national one, which the band used to take part in really regularly and given it’s Christchurch, that’s nice and local for us to take part in.

‘‘We did the Last of the Proms concert, we took part in the Battle of Britain and Seafarer services at St Mary’s Church, the Anzac Day services and will be playing on a float in the Santa Parade.’’

It was always important to get out and play in the community, she said.

‘‘It’s always wonderful to have that opportunity.

‘‘It’s good to be able to just show people what we’re doing.

‘‘A for members or potential members who want to join us, and B, just as a feel-good end of year, come and enjoy some good music thing.

‘‘We’re always open to new members of any age, any standard.

‘‘We’ve got ways and means of even beginners of incorporating them into the band if anyone’s interested in joining us for next year.’’

The concert will be held at Life Church on Morgans Rd and begin at 7pm.

Tickets are available from the Humantix website and cost $20 for adults and $15 for teenagers and children.
