The cycleway from Fairlie to Kimbell is completed, with the official opening to be held this weekend.

Central South Island Cycle Trails is ultimately aiming to link Timaru to Lake Tekapo.

Publicity officer Mark Lowen said despite having completed a good-sized chunk of the track, there was ‘‘no time for relaxing’’.

Mr Lowen said they were also already working on connecting Pleasant Point to Cave, and planning had been completed for Lake Tekapo to Edwards Stream.

He said Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency was ‘‘enthusiastic’’ about the trail, as it kept cyclists off the road and out of the way of heavy vehicles.

He said all were welcome to the opening — ‘‘bikes, prams, push-chairs, mobility scooters’’.

He said they would be meeting at the western boundary of Fairlie at 10.30am on Sunday before heading out to Kimbell for morning tea.
