Canterbury thoroughly outplayed South Canterbury in the Jackson Cup representative fixture held on Sunday.

Such was its dominance that the final round of pairs did not have to be played because of the lead Canterbury had established.

After it lost all three rounds in the morning session (fours 2›6, singles 13›19 and pairs 6›10) it was hoped that the local teams were going to rally after drawing the second round of fours matches.

However the Canterbury teams fared even better than they had in the morning session, winning the singles 23›9 and the pairs 12›4.

David Mealings, with five wins, was the best›performed player for South Canterbury, while Janet Briggs, who was called in from the development team, was the next best›performed player with three wins and a draw. Lyn Brown, Alan Reid and Carolyn Cooper were next best with three wins.

In the development matches for the Justin Thompson Cup, South Canterbury had a strong start by winning the fours 5›3 and the singles 17›15, only for Canterbury to win the pairs by 12›4, to secure a narrow halftime lead by 30›26.

South Canterbury once again performed strongly in the fours and singles, winning 5›3 and 18›14 respectively to take a 49›47 lead.

The South Canterbury pairs combination then fired this time and a 10›6 win there was enough for South Canterbury to retain the cup.

For South Canterbury, Neville Gould had four wins and two draws and Roydon Wood had five wins to be the best performer, with Dave Shand also close with four wins and a draw. Both Adam Blissett and Helen Black had four wins.

Final points were Jackson Cup: SC 38 Canterbury 74 and Thompson Cup: SC 59 Canterbury 53.

The over 55s pairs tournament was won by David and Mary Mealings with four wins, 26 ends won and 57 points scored, on a countback from Andy Blakeley and Jo Kerr with four wins, 24ends won and 51 points. Third were Allan Gibson and Dave Shand with three wins and a draw. It was pleasing to have good entries for this event.

The final 2×4 pairs was won by Alan Saunders and Evelyn Duffield with three wins, 15 ends and 33 points. They won on a countback from Andy Blakeley and Jo Kerr with three wins, 13 ends and 39 points, with third place going to Barry Black and Robin Esler with three wins, 13 ends and 31 points.

This tournament raised almost $200 for the Westpac Rescue helicopter and those attending were thanked for their contribution by chief organiser Barry Black.

This has been a very successful series of tournaments held in alternate weeks to the interclub competition, and it is hoped some of the unaffiliated bowlers will participate in the summer pairs during the off›season.

This weekend isset for the South Canterbury championship singles on Saturday and the South Canterbury RSA club tournament being held on Sunday.

The following weekend will be the South Canterbury championship pairs, which also incorporates the Brian Henry Trophy for the husband and wife team that goes the farthest.
