Paving the way for recreational cycling

The Central South Trail is making inroads.

Organiser John Clemens said the cycleway from Pleasant Point to Cave was ‘‘pretty much finished’’.

Mr Clemens said the project ultimately wanted to connect Timaru to Tekapo.

He said the trail was a multi-use cycleway, allowing cyclists, walkers, runners and people in wheelchairs to get out and about.

‘‘We cater for all.’’

He said there was a small section they will be trialling horses on; that area would be signposted, and horse riding groups in the area had been contacted about it.

He said while they were going to carry on with turning the goal into a reality, funding had been something which had slowed them down.

The section had funding from the Timaru District Council and central government, as well as private funders.

He said if anyone was interested in funding the project going forward he was keen to be in contact with them.

‘‘We are not going away, we will get there.’’
