A Timaru breast cancer survivor is walking on air.

Barbara Gilchrist raised more than $2000 for Sweet Louise after walking over 100km last weekend.

Sweet Louise is an organisation which provides support for people with incurable breast cancer, which was something Mrs Gilchrist hoped she would never have to receive.

Support for her quest had included 42 people, six pups, three prams, a disco van, one mobility scooter, a wheelchair and “one generously proportioned ballerina on a bike”, she said.

A foggy start on Saturday morning did not deter supporters from turning up to support Barbara Gilchrist’s fundraiser.

There was also one woman who came along who was receiving support from the organisation.

“That made it so real.”

Instead of sitting down promptly at 100km, she had ended up walking almost an extra kilometre, Mrs Gilchrist said.

“You are always capable of more than you think.”

As of Tuesday, her efforts had raised $2025 for the charity.

She wanted to say a “massive thank you” to everyone who had supported her, whether it was financially, physically or both.
