Fabrics are to the fore this Sunday as Altrusa International of Timaru holds its annual fabric and craft fair.

The fair is the culmination of a year of collecting and collating donations of fabrics, wool, knitting and craft patterns, crafting supplies, haberdashery items and jigsaw puzzles.

Funds raised this year will be donated to the Cancer Society’s South Canterbury centre.

Altrusa members Raewyn Hutton and May Mason said despite the fair having been held each year for around a decade, there appeared to be no shortage of fabrics and assorted items offered to the club.

Mrs Mason said her garage was ‘‘chocker’’ and the club’s lock-up had not yet been emptied for the event either.

‘‘It’s amazing where it comes from — the South Canterbury community just keeps supporting it.’’

The fair used to be held later in the year, but the club’s decision to move it to May appeared to have been a good one, with people more likely to be considering winter sewing, knitting and craft projects.

Donated items were priced to sell and the club had sold some significant items — such as large rolls of fabric and a sewing machine — online in order to optimise the amount of money raised.

The fair will be held at the West End Hall, this Sunday, 10am-2pm.
