The clippers came out at Pleasant Point Primary School last week as pupils and teachers lined up for a clean shave.

Five pupils, a teacher and the principal volunteered to lose their hair to raise funds for Child Cancer Foundation.

The idea was introduced by teacher Luke Robb, who is playing Uncle Fester in the South Canterbury Drama League’s production of The Addams Family.

‘‘I played Pugsley in my high school production of the show and it’s a great role playing Uncle Fester.’’

Mr Robb said instead of going through the hassle of using a bald cap for the role, he would rather shave his hair off, but wanted to do it for a cause.

Mr Robb talked to principal Mark Creba who was ‘‘more keen than him’’ and held a meeting which pupils attended. ‘‘The boys were keen from the get-go.’’

The school did a shave five years ago for charity and raised $1400.

Pupil Archie Nelson, who volunteered to get his head shaved, raised $1300 on his own this year. In total, the school had raised nearly $4000 in three weeks.

Mr Robb said he did some research and talked to the organisation which suggested doing a crazy hair day at the school when they were getting their heads shaved.

Mr Robb said they have had massive support from the community.

‘‘It’s been great. I feel everyone has a story about cancer and it made sense doing it for the kids.’’
