Geraldine High School students are set to deliver nostalgia as they take Back to the 80’s to the stage.
Head of department for performing and visual arts Eliza Williams said the ’80s pop musical would appeal to a large audience.
For some it was a moment to “reminisce about school days”, she said.
But people needed to get in quick, as when the school’s last production (Grease in 2024) had sold out it left people scrambling for tickets.
“We don’t want the same to happen again.”
Not including adults, there was a cast of 36 and a crew of 10, she said.
Back to the 80’s tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered through the eyes of now 30-something Corey Palmer.
Seventeen-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbour, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in the school, but she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, the hottest guy around.
Cast member and year 11 student Archie Gollan said he had participated in smaller events but this was his first major production.
The cast and crew were all “very dedicated to the show” and had all given up their own time to make it a success, he said.
Archie played Feargal McFerrin.
“It’s pretty fun playing the school nerd.”
While he had not tried any method acting, he found the perfect speech impediment for his character, he said.
Year 9 student Nikau Johnston-Gotty played Corey Palmer junior.
He said there had been “quite a lot” of lines to learn for the part.
Nikau said participating in the school show had allowed the students to try new things.
“And step out of our comfort zone.”
The show runs June 25-27 in the Geraldine High School Hall.
Tickets are available from humanitix.
