A Timaru high school production is set to tackle the looming rise of artificial intelligence (AI) to the iconic music of Queen.

In June, the Timaru Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools’ joint musical We Will Rock You will hit the stage.

Written by Ben Elton (Mr. Bean and Blackadder) — the jukebox musical is set 300 years in the future on iPlanet, or as it was formerly known, Earth.

Life is lived virtually and everyday life is run by the corporation Global Soft and only the Bohemians can rock’n’roll.

Director Chris Cheesman said the production aimed to explore the dangers of AI in the arts space.

‘‘It’s a very funny script, however, it prophetically addresses the question of AI and the dangers of computer controlled arts.

‘‘Audiences are encouraged to sing along with Queen classics and each night there will be a limited number of ‘High Tea with Queen’ (supper and champagne) tickets.’’

While many students were familiar with the band’s music there were a large number who were not, she said.

‘‘It was about 50-50. Everyone knew the likes of We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions.

‘‘Bohemian Rhapsody, surprisingly, not as many as I thought knew.’’

Timaru Boys’ High School (TBHS) arts co-ordinator Benjamin Donaldson said it was only the school’s second musical since Covid-19.

‘‘In 2024 we had Mallet Man, which was written by Wayne Doyle [TBHS visual arts teacher].

‘‘This is the first time in a long time where we’ve actually gone and got a licensed musical, which is a big thing for us.’’

The musical will be staged at 7.30pm, June 16-19 at the Timaru Boys’ High School Hogben Hall.

General tickets are $15 and available from iTicket, both schools’ offices or at the door.

High Tea with Queen tickets can only be purchased from iTicket for $45.
