Twelve secondary school choirs will perform in Timaru this week.

Timaru is hosting the New Zealand Choral Federation’s Big Sing Credenza South Island competition at Craighead Diocesan School tomorrow and Saturday, with a public concert at the Sacred Heart Basilica on Saturday night.

Choirs from Invercargill to Nelson — including Craighead’s chorale — would compete in the event, which involved about 300 pupils and support people, organiser Wayne Pahl said.

Mr Pahl said it would be the second time Timaru had hosted the event; the first was in 2019. Covid›19 restrictions meant the competition was cancelled for the past two years.

‘‘Timaru has a long›standing link with the choral festival. We’re able to use the Craighead auditorium as our venue.’’

Mr Pahl said the event served as a boost for local business. Some choirs from furthest afield were arriving in Timaru today, and accommodation had been booked as far out as Geraldine.
