The euphonious sound of South Canterbury youth is set to echo through Caroline Bay this weekend.

Children’s Day has been running in South Canterbury for more than 20 years, and is back again this Sunday.

Held at Caroline Bay, the day encourages families to partake in a wide variety of fun activities for absolutely no cost.

For the first time the Timaru Youth Collective (TYC) will be holding an concert comprised solely of young, local musicians.

TYC founder and Children’s Day committee member Jared Pratt said there would be three solo acts and one band performing on the day.

‘‘It’s looking really good. We’re obviously part of the bigger picture but we did the skate stuff last year and it will be really cool to be able to offer some music this year.

‘‘Hilton Haulage have been kind enough to supply us with a curtain-side truck and Richard ‘Stix’ Howey from Audio Dynamite is going to come down and do the sounds for us.

‘‘It will be a good vibe and pretty casual.’’

He said he felt it was important to give the young musicians a safe space and opportunity to play in front of a sizable crowd.

‘‘TYC [is] just trying to support young musos, artists and just young people in general, so hopefully this gives these guys an opportunity to just go out and play.

‘‘We have Grace Steele who won the Caroline Bay junior talent show this year, Milah Hughes who performed at Rock Quest, local guitar prodigy Hunter Hart and E Riff, who are a five-piece band from Roncalli College.

‘‘All of them are in high school, apart from one of the band members who I think has just left.’’

Children’s Day will run from 10am-2pm with the concert beginning at noon.

Like previous years the Caroline Bay Association rides will be running for free, the Lions Club will be operating the little train and, along with the Salvation Army, will hold a sausage sizzle.

The bay hall will also be full with various groups from the region offering different activities.
