Mackenzie College students have been given the opportunity to blow their own trumpet.
An annual musical showcase for the primary schools next week, would allow college students to play their instruments in front of an audience.
All instruments played at the college would be represented.
‘‘We will have the instruments taught by our itinerant tutors; brass, woodwind, voice and strings. But also those taught by private music teachers, these include piano, drums and new this year, the bagpipes,’’ arts co-ordinator Claire Dann said.
Ms Dann said the college held the annual showcase as an opportunity for students to perform in front of an audience — especially for those who had never done so — and give the primary school students in the area a ‘‘taste’’ of what their options are when they attend the college.
She said while it would not be open to the general public, the event was seen as a ‘‘warm up’’ to the Young Performers Concert which was for the wider community and would be held at the Community Centre in October.
‘‘It’s about conquering some nerves and being able to showcase all that they have been working on over the year.
‘‘For some it comes naturally, but for most its a skill that needs to be practised.
‘‘Some who are performing next week only started learning at the start of this year, so its an amazing accomplishment to be able to perform and get that sense of pride and recognition.’’
She said when learning an instrument, starting from scratch could be daunting, but performing allowed students to see how far they had come.
