Geraldine’s emergency helipad is having its official launch.

Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade spokesman Matt Harrison said while the helipad had been in operation for a couple of months now, the launch this Saturday would be its official opening.

Mr Harrison said it would allow the community an opportunity to see what all their hard work and fundraising had achieved.

The pad had been constructed in the Geraldine Domain, directly behind the fire station in Talbot St.

The helipad had provided the community with resilient infrastructure, not only for emergency healthcare, but for other essential times of need, such as during natural disasters when other transport links might be damaged.

It enabled pilots to use instrument flight rules, which allowed nighttime use and guidance during poor weather conditions.

The community had helped to raise well over the initial $48,000 they had set out to secure for the helipad.

‘‘It wouldn’t be possible without the amazing community sprit from the Geraldine community.

‘‘It will save seconds and lives.’’

The event will be held on Saturday from 10.30am-noon at 118 Talbot St and will include static displays from Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Hato Hone St John.

A morning tea will be provided and there will be firefighter costumes for children to dress up in.
