Timaru Boys’ High School First XI hockey team will get the chance to put its name on the one of South Canterbury’s most prestigious club trophies for the first time on Tuesday night.

The Walker & Hall Shield is up for grabs and TBHS, as South Canterbury division 1 champion, will face off against Wakanui Black from Ashburton for the shield.

Originally presented in 1932, the trophy was competed for by champion clubs from Ashburton, North Otago, South Canterbury and Geraldine, who were a sub› association in those days.

Timaru’s South End A was the first winner, and not only took the shield home, it had to insure it.

South Canterbury’s Eastern was the last side to win it, when it was played for among only Timaru›based teams last year.

However, Mid Canterbury champion Wakanui Black decided to challenge for it this year.

The game will be played at Aorangi Park on Tuesday night at 7.15pm.

The TBHS team will be a tough opponent, having finished sixth at the Rankin Cup, which is the top boys’ national school tournament, and is keen to add it to its trophy cabinet.
