The Brooklands challenge will once again put a piece of motorsport history on the line at Levels Raceway on Saturday.

The annual event in the Classic Motor Racing Club calendar features action from pre-’78 classic saloons, the allcomer classic saloons, sports and GTs, formula libre, vintage, historic cars and the mighty classic action bikes.

Importantly, the Brooklands trophy will also be up for grabs.

The event involves selected motorcycles and cars running separate time trials, estimating the total elapsed time for each event.

The competition requires precision, with racers sometimes needing to slow or even stop in an attempt to achieve their predicted time.

The closest to the estimated time wins a piece of the original Brooklands circuit.

Piece of history . . . The Brooklands Trophy, featuring a piece from the famous British track.

The trophy itself came about due to George Begg, a man well-known in both car and bike circles in New Zealand, who also for a short period worked in England under the keen eye of Kiwi motorsport legend Bruce McLaren.

While in England, Begg and a friend noticed the famous Brooklands track in England was being broken up.

The pair salvaged several pieces and brought them back to New Zealand.

A small piece of the historical 4.43km Brooklands track, which was last used in 1939 after being taken over by the British Air Ministry due to war efforts, was mounted on a piece of wood and presented to the Classic Action Motorcycle Sport Club and the Classic Motor Racing Club for use as an inter-club trophy.

Since the two different vehicles could not compete on the track at the same time, they began the Brooklands challenge and have competed for the trophy since.

The event will begin on Saturday at 10am and is free for the public to spectate.
