A new Washdyke store is setting out to rescue and rehome old timber.
Located in the yard at Jmac Joinery, what was initially a pop-up store to aid with a fundraiser is now set to officially open fulltime on Saturday.
Jmac Joinery owner John ‘‘Spongy’’ McCarthy said it was great to be able to have an official opening day.
‘‘We’ve been kind of open for the last month or so, but we want to make it official.
‘‘In conjunction with that we did ‘November is GST-free month’, but we’ll extend that into December as a bit of a bonus for the opening.’’
Their slogan was ‘‘rescuing and rehoming the timbers of the ages’’.
‘‘We’re really just an orphanage until stuff goes out again.
‘‘It’s just trying to do something a little bit different, utilising more stuff and more recycled stuff than just dumping or burning it.
‘‘We’re trying to impress upon people what was available out there and what can be reutilised and redone.’’
A lot of the items for sale had been created from repurposed timber and bluestone from around Timaru and Christchurch, he said.
‘‘There are lots of statues and art from Steve Molloy and young Ben Bruce with Timbersoul has been doing his ‘kitchen regalia’ stuff.
‘‘They’re just utilising the materials that we’ve got here and trying to be slightly more diverse than just making standard stuff.
‘‘Everything’s a little bit different.’’
There would be lots of opportunity for giftware, Mr McCarthy said.
‘‘But it’s not the run-of-the-mill giftware — it’s stuff that’s handcrafted.
‘‘I can’t really say much more than take a look around, come have a nose and see what there is available.
‘‘People don’t have to buy what’s here. We will make on demand or on suggestion, which is a lot of what we’ve done so far.
‘‘People have come in and gone ‘well, you know, I wouldn’t mind something like that’, so we’ll build two of them. It just makes it a little bit more interesting.’’
The official opening will run from 10am-4pm and then the shop will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and potentially Fridays from 9am-3pm.
