Mackenzie landowners are set to help cyclists get off the beaten path.

A crucial part of the Central South Trail — which will link Fairlie to Rockwood Rd — is set to be opened this weekend.

The trail is part of an overarching plan to link Timaru to Tekapo.

Central South Trails chairman Kieran Guiney said the cycleway had been designed for everyone to enjoy, “whether you’re walking, running, or cycling”.

Mr Guiney said it was an “awesome piece of track” which meandered across farmland, showcasing beautiful scenery and extensive native plantings.

“For the ‘hard core’ cyclists, you will be able to cycle from Timaru to Oamaru via our trail once completed.

“A huge thank you must go to the landowners who have so generously made this possible.

“We are incredibly grateful to the McFarlane, Isbister, and Bell families.

“This trail exists because of your willingness to share your land. We trust users will respect this privilege.”

As the trail passed through private farmland, dogs were not permitted on this section of the trail.

“This trail is a fantastic facility for both locals and tourists.”

He said the whole community was invited to the launch of the trail.

All Black Scott Barrett would be cutting the ribbon at the official opening.

“I’d also like to acknowledge our dedicated committee.

‘‘Their hard work, determination, and commitment have seen over two-thirds of the trail completed — an outstanding achievement.

“Biggest thanks to our generous donors.

“Special thanks to our local contractors and supporters: Nigel and Viv Blair, Rooney’s, Tony Boyce Fencing, the Fairlie Lions, and Gavin, our bridge builder.

“As funding becomes available, we’re excited to begin the next section from Rockwood to Albury.”

The trail’s official opening celebration will be held on Saturday at 11am.

Mr Guiney advised people to follow balloons from the Rockwood Rd/SH8 corner.

Parking would be available on Rockwood Rd.

A barbecue would be held before the official opening.

“Bring your bikes or walking shoes, and enjoy the day,” Mr Guiney said.
