Marathon cycle effort for a cause

Ready to ride . . . Waihi School’s assistant headmaster Nathan Morland will be getting on his bike to give back to the community.

Nathan Morland is pushing his body to its limits for a good cause, as he plans to ride for 24 hours to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Waihi School’s assistant headmaster came up with the idea as he was recovering from Covid-19.

He wanted to do something for the children, especially after having seen a few pupils at the school and their families battle cancer.

‘‘Seeing them go through it and how they have been affected is rubbish and unfair,’’ he said.

He just wanted to do something to support them. He is aiming to raise $5000, and has raised nearly $3500 so far.

‘‘It will be unpleasant and it will hurt but it is all for a good cause, so it is all worth it.’’

He had decided to cycle as it was something he had always enjoyed, and he wanted to see how far he could push his limits. The longest ride he had done was 13 to 14 hours long, but this was a challenge he was looking forward to, and for a good cause.

‘‘The community is great and my wife is great and has been very supportive.’’

He has also received a lot of advice and support from James Smith and the team at the Cyclery in Timaru.

‘‘It’s really cool and I have been really lucky to have the support of the school and the community to help give back to those in need.’’

The event will be held in Waihi School’s hall on September 3 so children and their families can be involved.

‘‘It’s great to get the kids involved as it’s not just what happens in the classroom. We will see how it goes.’’
