Alzheimer’s South Canterbury is encouraging the South Canterbury community to get moving next month.

Move for Dementia is a month-long event running in September which is World Alzheimer’s Month.

Alzheimer’s South Canterbury fundraising and public relations co›ordinator Chantelle Litten said people did not have to do big workouts or activities if they did not want to.

‘‘It could be something as small as walking around the block on your lunch break; [it] could be done for a few days to a week or for the whole month.’’

This is the third year the campaign has taken place and focuses on getting people active while raising awareness and funds to support those living with dementia.

‘‘It’s become more popular which is really awesome. It’s just about getting a little bit involved for a good cause.’’

Motivating Mums’ Alicia Mabey is hosting a family fun fitness event at Caroline Bay on September 24 to support the campaign.

She said that they will be doing exercises for every skill level and it would be a good day for t families to bring a picnic lunch and blanket to the bay to make a day of it.

‘‘My father has dementia, so I know what it is like and I wanted to help out and get involved.

‘‘The more awareness raised the better, to help reduce the stigma and bring support.’’

Entry to the event will be by donation and each donation entry will receive one ticket which goes in the draw for a spot prize donated by local businesses.

There are prizes for certain categories, including most funds raised by an individual, best purple party and most funds raised by a family, and a raffle will be held.
