Two Timaru businesses are hoping they ‘‘can’’ make a difference for local families this Christmas.

Movie Max Digital Cinemas and The Warehouse Timaru, are teaming up in a ‘‘Cans for Christmas’’ initiative, each donating 500 cans of food and hoping locals will help them add to that haul, giving local foodbanks a welcome boost for the festive season.

There will be donation stations at both locations, and 12 VIP movie passes are also up for grabs as an added incentive to show some community spirit.

The Warehouse manager Nick Boyd said MovieMax Digital owner Brent Birchfield had come to him with the idea and he was keen to come on board.

‘‘I thought it was a great thing for our community, it’s a tough time of the year for a lot of people.’’

Mr Birchfield said he hoped people would contribute what they were able and ensure a substantial donation for local foodbanks at the end of the donation period.

Cans for Christmas will run from today until December 14.
