As Christmas comes closer, the Timaru Boys’ Brigade has worked hard throughout the year to fundraise for a bike, which they have donated to Family Works South Canterbury.

The task was undertaken by 11-to 14-year-old boys who came up with the idea last year.

To raise the funds they washed cars, mowed lawns, stacked firewood, did some gardening, made and sold cupcakes, and also painted a very long fence.

The boys raised $260 and spent it on a new, pink bike they purchased from The Warehouse.

The Warehouse donated a helmet and assembled the bike for them.

A second-hand green bike with a helmet was given to the Boys’ Brigade, which they also donated to Family Works.

Family Works South Canterbury general manager Liz Nolan said this was some forward thinking for boys at this age.

‘‘They have an awareness which is lovely, and this is fabulous.’’

She thanked them for thinking of others and would let them know who the bike went to.

‘‘It is going to mean a lot to the family that receives this and it will make someone’s Christmas.’’

The Boys’ Brigade decided that next year they would work towards fundraising money to purchase a scooter, a skateboard and safety gear to donate.
