Bargains for charity: Bookarama returns

Bookish delight . . . A good crowd of people is expected for the Bookarama as it returns to Timaru this November.

Book lovers should start making room on the bookshelves as Timaru North Rotary Club gets ready to host their second Bookarama of the year.

Timaru North Rotary Club president Gavin Craig said it has started collecting donated books from service stations around Timaru.

‘‘People can donate books they no longer need to the service stations.’’

The club was after donations of books, tapes, CDs, DVDs, records and puzzles, but were not after any magazines or encyclopedias.

Mr Craig said the four foot container they had was only half full at the moment.

‘‘We are currently restocking the supply of books, but it fills up fast.’’

The Bookarama has been running since 1976 and the money raised from it goes to various charities around South Canterbury.

The club raised $10,000 from the June Bookarama, which was donated to the Heart Foundation, Stroke Club, Hospice South Canterbury and the Life Education Trust.

All of those charities usually gain donations from the Hadlow-to-Harbour fun run, but missed out this year when it was cancelled in March.

The club was also able to make a $5000 donation to CPlay.

Mr Craig said it was good they could hold the Bookarama at this time, as this was when they normally held it.

‘‘Covid-19 changed what we did — in 2020 we couldn’t have one. It’s well supported and hopefully it will go well.’’

The Bookarama will be held from November 4-6 at the Trinity Church Hall in College Rd, Timaru.
