GODSPELL South Canterbury Drama League The Playhouse February 1-4 Review by Anita Dawson
On Monday evening I had the pleasure of attending a dress rehearsal of the musical Godspell, the first cab off the rank for the South Canterbury Drama League’s 2023 line-up.
This is truly an outstanding production and an absolute must-see for lovers of theatre and music.
Godspell, originally written and performed in the 1970s, was updated in 2011.
The show takes its audience on a journey, as nine characters, having met together in a church, play out biblical parables and the teachings of Jesus Christ, using song, dance and a variety of storytelling devices.
The show shines a spotlight on universal values such as kindness, respect and integrity.
The show is blessed with a talented and experienced creative team including director and choreographer Bronwyn Chittock, and musical director Catherine Anderson, a newcomer to the league.
Under the pair’s guidance the cast delivers a slick and well-paced show, with great storytelling, memorable dance and movement, and incredible vocal work — especially evident in the many complex harmonies.
A special feature of the show is the four-piece band that accompanies the singers.
Situated behind the action, but still visible to the audience, the skilled musicians are integral to the show, bringing a richness and depth to the musical numbers.
The action is positioned inside a church undergoing renovation with the simple and effective set design evoking a clear sense of a sacred space in need of repair.
The actors navigate the space well, and different levels are used with effect throughout the performance.
The lighting is also very effective, complementing the changing moods as the story progresses, bringing us closer to the emotional climax of the show.
Godspell has a stellar cast, as Cameron Lines delivers a strong and charismatic performance in the demanding role of Jesus.
His song Beautiful City is particularly moving and beautifully sung.
Cam Sutcliffe commands attention in the dual roles of John the Baptist and Judas and his musical number On the Willows showcases his rich vocals.
Briar Allen, Ella Thomas, Hannah Harris, Macy Shields, Nyah Chittock, Phoebe Evans-Hoffgen and Victoria Chappell form a tight and cohesive company group, as they take turns acting out the parables.
Each and every member of the cast brings energy, passion, stage presence and strong vocals to their performance.
Some highlights for me included the powerhouse vocals in Learn Your Lessons Well and Bless the Lord, the energetic All for the Best, and the hauntingly beautiful By My Side.
There is a clear sense of camaraderie in this cast, and the enjoyment on stage is palpable.
Godspell is a brilliant production that will appeal to, and delight, audience members of all ages.
Congratulations to everyone involved and don’t miss out on securing tickets. And bring the tissues!
