Groove on into the 1970s as the fast-paced farce Run For Your Wife hits the stage tomorrow night.
The British show, written by Ray Cooney and being directed by TJ Ramsay, has actors running across the stage while telling the story of taxi driver John Smith and his two wives.
Cam Sutcliffe, who plays Detective Troughton, said the farce was a lot more fullon compared with other shows he had done, such as The Addams Family.
‘‘Jokes come faster and if you miss one, two seconds later there will be one making you laugh.’’
Mr Sutcliffe thought the script was brilliant and was enjoying being a part of a farce for the first time.
‘‘As a performer, you’re on your toes, you have more lines to learn and the lack of music to use as an emotional crutch means it is all on the actors to keep the audience engaged and excited.’’
Cameron Lines, who plays John Smith, and whose mother is directing the show, said the farce was a lost genre.
‘‘It’s so much fun and I’m getting very fit, and I’m so glad it is before summer time otherwise it would have been diabolical performing it on the stage.’’
Kevin Foley, who plays Detective Porterhouse, said farces were serious business.
‘‘It is hard work and not as easy as it looks to the audience.’’ Karel Hill, who plays Stanley Gardner, said the show was complete and utter chaos. ‘‘But I thrive on chaos and the show is perfect. It is also a test of strength.’’
He said they could not have a better director. ‘‘She [TJ Ramsay] is so involved with the show and has a lot of patience for us.’’ Mr Hill said he hoped the South Canterbury Drama League would put on another farce in the future.
‘‘Audiences will leave Run For Your Wife laughing and I hope [they] will come along to more farces in the future.’’
Audiences are encouraged to dress in ’70s-themed clothing for the opening night and there will be a prize for best dressed.
