The time of the year to break out those round glasses and flared jeans has come round again, as the South Canterbury Museum gets ready to host their annual musical time warp this weekend.

Retro Rock at the Museum first began as a one-off event in 2018 when the museum held an exhibit about 1960s music.

South Canterbury Museum director Philip Howe said he could not believe how far the event had come since then.

‘‘It has been a wonderful thing to see it keep growing and that people want to see it continue.

‘‘For the first one, we hoped to get a couple of hundred people come along but were amazed when over 1000 appeared.

Rock on . . . Local band VHS, who will be returning once again this year, perform at last year’s event.

‘‘It really speaks to the interest and need for events downtown.’’

Opening the show this year is local band Remedy, a group comprising year 11 pupils from Craighead Diocesan School.

It was great to give the next generation of musicians a space to play, Mr Howe said.

‘‘Outside of the Smokefree Rockquest there are not too many places for young people to play.

‘‘It’s great to be able to give young local bands a chance to play in a large, friendly and safe space.’’

He believed the event attracted a lot of interest because of the juxtaposition of rock music and a museum.

Also announced for the event are local bands Quattro, who will be making their retro rock debut, and VHS, who made an appearance at last year’s event.

Watching on . . . Crowds gather on the bank overlooking Perth St.

Crowd participation will still play a big part, as audience members are encouraged to dress in retro rock or pop gear from yesteryear.

Spot prizes will be awarded for the best dressed.

There will also be events held on the night such as a local history and music quiz and the chance to win lucky prizes.

Food vendors will be present and the museum will be open for a quieter time-out space for people to enjoy.

Retro Rock will be held on Saturday from 7pm, outside the South Canterbury Museum in Perth St.
