The rip-roaring rumble of American automobiles will once again echo through the streets of Timaru this weekend.

This Saturday and Sunday, the South Canterbury Vintage Car Club All American Weekend will be held to raise money for Cardiac Kids Club Mid and South Canterbury.

From Chevies to Caddies, a wide assortment of Americanmade vehicles will be on display at Caroline Bay on Sunday.

Saturday is being reserved for the participants’ cruise.

Event organiser Grant Stewart said as well as supporting a great cause, it was a wonderful opportunity to get people’s cars out.

‘‘It’s a chance for people to show off their cars and what’s been hiding in the garage. There is always a lot of good stuff hiding away.

‘‘It’s always nice to see them on the road and it is also great to work with Cardiac Kids. . . . They are a good organisation and they definitely earn their money.’’

Individuals pay $10 to take part in the cruise, $5 per adult at the destination, and a further $15 per display vehicle, all the proceeds going to Cardiac Kids.

Mr Stewart said on average they normally get anywhere from 120-150 vehicles at the display day.

‘‘The Mustang club from Christchurch usually comes down and we get the occasional car from Dunedin as well.

‘‘The All American has been running for approximately 25 years and it is still proving to be a well-regarded event.’’

Cardiac Kids Club chairwoman Rebecca Honeybone said she was very grateful for the support the organisation received.

‘‘We are really lucky to be a part of the Mid and South Canterbury community — events like these mean the world to us.

‘‘Obviously, money and things are great because we can do our events and help support people but it’s also about getting to know people in the community and getting to know these groups.’’

Cardiac Kids is an organisation that supports anyone of any age who has a congenital or acquired heart condition.

Miss Honeybone said it was great to be able to provide a support system for those affected.

‘‘We’ve all lived through it so it is great to have support from people who know what it is like

— we’re all a family to each other.’’

The All American Weekend would be a great time for everyone, she said.

‘‘It’s all just really fun. The kids just love the cars and it’s not just great for Cardiac Kids but for everybody in the community to come down to the bay and have a look at some cool cars.’’

The car display will take place on Sunday from 10am to 2pm in the Caroline Bay north carpark.

Entry to view is a gold coin donation, and there will be a live band and food and drink.
