A staple children’s sporting event is set to return to Timaru after a five-year hiatus.

After last being held in 2020, The Timaru Kids Tryathlon will return on Sunday, February 22.

The non-competitive event, which is led by the Timaru Suburban Lions, challenges children aged 7-14 to have a go, build confidence and be active.

Event co-ordinator Teressa May said it was great to be able to run the event in Timaru once again.

‘‘Timaru Suburban Lions were looking for new ways to further support the community and, having previously worked alongside the Timaru Triathlon Club in marshalling roles — and with one of our members having previously run the event — we approached the club last year about bringing it back.

‘‘The Triathlon Club was keen to be supported and to see this popular youth event return to the calendar.

‘‘At the same time, Lions has been actively strengthening its focus on youth, including through LEO Lions, which supports young people aged 12 to 30 years. The kids tryathlon fits naturally with this focus, promoting participation, confidence and community values from an early age. . .’’

She said events like the tryathlon gave young people the chance to step outside, have a go, get active and off their devices.

‘‘It’s kids having a go, families backing them, and the whole community getting behind something positive.

‘‘By working alongside a range of community groups, this is exactly the kind of fun, inclusive, active event Lions is proud to support as part of its commitment to youth and community wellbeing.’’

To celebrate the event’s return to the Timaru calendar, a special participation medal has also been designed, and every child will receive one at the finish line.

The swimming leg of the event will be held at the Aorangi Park Aquatic Centre, while the biking and running legs will be held at Caroline Bay.

The club is also on the lookout for more volunteers to help with roles like registration and marshalling.
