Playing ball . . . The Canterbury and Otago Gold teams go head to head.

Teams from Canterbury, South Canterbury and Otago competed in the annual indoor Football Ribbon Day competition held by Special Olympics South Canterbury.

The competition took place at the Southern Trust Events Centre in Timaru recently with teams from Special Olympics Otago and Special Olympics Canterbury competing against the Special Olympics South Canterbury team.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Start the match . . . The South Canterbury Dynamos and the South Canterbury Bravehearts debate the kickoff.

Through the power of sports, athletes with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths such as confidence, abilities and skills, and get to experience success through competition.

The Otago Gold team finished in first place, followed by Canterbury, then Otago Blue.

The South Canterbury Bravehearts came fourth and the South Canterbury Dynamos were fifth.

Special Olympics South Canterbury is run by a small group of volunteers who arrange the football programme, which runs from March to September each year, and the athletics programme, which is scheduled to start at Aorangi Park on October 27.
