Newcomers have put down their roots in the region.
A totara was planted at the Te Ana Māori Rock Art site in Taniwha Gully to mark Timaru’s first Welcoming Week.
Timaru District Council community development manager Claire Barlow said the week was busy.
There were various events celebrating newcomers and Tonga Language Week.
The tree planting was a special way for newcomers to put their roots down in Timaru and feel connected to the district’s history and stories, which were reflected in the Ma ¯ori rock art.
‘‘This was our first time celebrating Welcoming Week.
‘‘We’d like to thank the community for hosting and attending the variety of events that were on offer.
‘‘We know that welcoming communities are stronger communities.
‘‘We don’t welcome once, we welcome always,’’ Mrs Barlow said.
