More than a dozen South Canterbury businesses have banded together to form a supergroup with the goal of giving back to the community.

Members of the Networkers NZ, a local business networking group, decided they would work together to complete a community project every six months.

Last Friday they completed their first project at the BestStart Marchwiel early learning centre.

Over the course of the day, members constructed a new roof in the play area, installed drainage, helped with planting, painting, staining and any other odd jobs the early learning centre needed help with.

Project organiser and Vetta Group founder Shaun Fisher said it was great to be able to come in and help a place that really needed it.

‘‘We have about 12 to 16 local businesses here lending a hand and we also have Mitre 10 who donated all the materials, and ABC Contracting to make sure we do a good job of it all, especially the roof.

‘‘Due to government changes and funding, places like this don’t really get the opportunity to just go full tilt and do something like this on their own.

‘‘We just wanted to the give the whole place a real upgrade, really, and being able to give something to the kids is pretty cool as well.’’

He said it was great to have so many different businesses come together and work as one large group.

‘‘We’ve got graphic designers, obviously construction groups, we’ve got a lawyer, an accountant, architects and insurance brokers.

‘‘There’s just such a wide range of businesses and people that have just come together and are just getting down with it all.’’

BestStart Marchwiel centre manager Sarah Payne said they were humbled to receive the help.

‘‘Shaun approached us and there is always stuff around here that we can’t get around to.

‘‘They’ve just gone above and beyond so we are just really thankful.’’

She said the work done would make a massive difference for the centre.

‘‘It will really make a difference in how we can run our space and how we can present to the community.

‘‘We’re just really humbled so many businesses would come together to support us.’’

The project was made possible by Networkers NZ members from Vetta Group, Affinity & Co Insurance, Autobling Detailing, Complete Carpentry Solutions, Garner Architecture, Mike Greer Homes, Noone Plus, Origin Design, South Zealandia, Tenika Reihana, Timpany Walton, Wash-Rite South Canterbury, Mitre 10 Mega Timaru and ABC Contracting.
