Roncalli College students have been stocking shelves at a local foodbank.
The school hosted a house challenge last week, which involved donating nonperishable food to St Vincent de Paul.
Each house was given a different item to donate, such as canned food, biscuits, pasta, rice, and hot drinks.
Director of religious study Rachael Burrowes said the challenge had been the initiative of the school’s special character leaders and house leaders.
Miss Burrowes said the idea had come about as part of Lent.
Year 13 student Hazelle Tate said ‘‘we wanted to focus on giving, instead of giving something up’’.
Miss Burrowes said the initiative was ‘‘faith in action’’.
The organisers had a goal of receiving 500 items, but ended up with over 900.
Year 13 student Alexis Miller said — knowing the cost of living was rising — the group had provided an opportunity to the students to give.
‘‘To help with those who are struggling.’’
Student Nellie O’Driscoll said ‘‘it felt good to know we made a difference in people’s lives’’.
St Vincent de Paul’s spokeswoman Maree Lowen was thankful for the donation.
Mrs Lowen said the shelves at the foodbank were starting to get bare.
Last year’s non-perishable goods — which the foodbank had received from Toot for Tucker — had been running out.
‘‘This had helped the situation.’’
The usually gave out an average of over 80 parcels a month, but demand had increased by 50%.
She said the op shop had been busy too, with people looking for warm bedding and warm clothes.
‘‘We are very grateful.’’
