Society makes life easier for film-lovers

One of the films selected by the Timaru Film Society for viewing this year is The Cats of Gokogu Shrine. The film is based on a shrine in Japan, which was home to dozens of street cats. While Gokogu looks peaceful on the surface, it is also the epicentre of a sensitive issue that divides the local community. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Timaru’s film society is offering newcomers the chance to break into the scene.

Society spokeswoman Jayne Blakemore said in an attempt to make the viewings more accessible to everyone in the community, the group had two more options for newcomers this year.

She said along with the yearly membership, there was a discounted student membership of $80 for the year.

There was also a ‘‘three movie sampler’’ for $30, which allowed newcomers the chance to see if they liked it before fully committing.

For those who were unable to attend many of the movies throughout the year, it gave them the chance to still take part.

The society offered people the chance to meet with likeminded people ‘‘and the chance to have a chat afterwards’’.

The season starts on February 10 and ends in November.
