Seaweek seeks input for additional activities

Planning for next year’s seaweek is going swimmingly well.

The week, which will be led by the South Canterbury Eco Centre, will run from late February to early March.

Organiser Alice Brice had her mind set that the week would make a comeback.

‘‘I’m passionate because we, as a seaside town, don’t understand the ocean.

‘‘We don’t know what’s out there in our backyard.

‘‘Who has been on the ocean here past the pontoon? Many Timaruvians have not.’’

While the week already had events organised — like a story time at the library — Mrs Brice hoped more things could be added to the calendar.

She said anything from a beach clean up, yoga on the bay, kayaking, paddle boarding and plastic free challenges could be included.

She was inviting community members and clubs to host an activity.

Mrs Brice hoped the week would make people more conscious of what treasures were hidden in the sea, like crabs, dolphins and penguins.

She said there would be an interactive seaweek stall at the Children’s Day event which will be held at Caroline Bay on March 1.

Seaweek will run from February 28 until March 8.
