Scarecrow contest highlight of fair

Scaring the birds . . . A past scarecrow entry stands outside Barton Rural School for the scarecrow competition.

A fun day is planned for families this weekend as Barton Rural School prepares for its country fair.

The school normally holds the fair every two years, but it had to cancel its last attempt a few weeks beforehand due to Covid-19.

Barton Rural School committee member Janelle Brickle said the fair was the school’s major fundraiser.

One of the exciting activities that families from the school compete in is the construction of scarecrows before the fair.

‘‘It’s a great way to get the kids excited about the upcoming fair and it also attracts public interest,’’ Ms Brickle said.

There is a scarecrow competition; everyone entering provides a photo.

The rules were quite vague and people were only limited by their imagination, she said.

‘‘This year we have entries of SpongeBob, ET, Emma Wiggle, a couple of camping crows, one on a ride›on mower, a duck›shooter, and the list goes on.’’

The entry that gets most votes at the fair will win a prize.

The fair would start at 10am on Sunday. There would be food and craft stalls, as well as children’s activities.

‘‘We will have some of our very talented Barton children performing and a live band will be playing over the lunch hour.

‘‘It’s a day that no-one wants to miss out on.’’
