Sixty years of supporting South Canterbury people with multilpe sclerosis (MS) are being commemorated at an event in Timaru next week.
MS South Canterbury is holding a special dinner and dessert evening commemorating the anniversary and featuring a number of guest speakers.
The three Timaru people who took part in the Ride for MS Cambodia and raised just over $24,000 between them, New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust trustee Neil Woodhams and MS New Zealand national manager Amanda Rose, will all be speaking.
South Canterbury chairman Barry Taylor said the area had been well served by the organisation over the past 60 years, first as more of an informal social and support network, to its more formal establishment thanks to the generosity of a local family which donated $100,000 each to 13 local organisations.
For many years the society had its own rooms in King St, Timaru, before selling up and moving to Community House in 2011.
Unlike similar organisations in other areas, MS South Canterbury had not needed to merge with other groups and still maintained a community adviser — Fiona Pierce — who has been in the role for 22 years.
The event will be held on Friday, April 10 at the Fraser Park function centre.
