South Canterbury’s junk is about to be given a new lease of life.

Applications to compete in Timaru’s fourth Junk to Funk show — held in August this year — have now opened.

Event organiser Alice Brice said 32 people took part in last year’s show, and the entries had blown her away.

“It was a great way to bring our community together to appreciate creativity and sustainability.”

She was “genuinely” very excited about the event.

While the event fee had been kept cheap and accessible, they had “upped the prizes”.

Those prizes were given by Enviro NZ, The Crows Nest, Timaru Sewing Centre and New Zealand Raptor Trust.

A preschool category had been added after feedback from a disappointed 4-year-old who could not enter.

As it would be too hard to judge the younger entrants’ work, there would be no prizes for that category, Mrs Brice said.

There were many notable entrants in last year’s event, which was still inspiring her family, she said.

Her son had recently bought a small bike to upcycle, similar to an entry from last year, while her daughter had been very inspired by the pile of books constructed into a coffee table.

The competition would be capped at 50 entries this year.

A school holiday programme for children would be available, where they could create something to enter.

Mrs Brice said she would be in discussions with The Crows Nest to find out what materials they had the holiday programme could work with.

“Last year it had been records.”
