A van-full of cans will make its way to South Canterbury food banks over the next few days, thanks to the efforts of two local businesses and the community.

Movie Max Digital Cinemas and The Warehouse Timaru, teamed up for a ‘‘Cans for Christmas’’ initiative, each donating 500 cans of food and putting donation bins at both locations for members of the public to contribute, which saw another 300 cans added to the donation.

Food Rescue Aoraki operations manager Helen McKeown said the cans would be distributed to about 15 organisations around South Canterbury this week to help top up depleted supplies, and it was likely all would be distributed before Christmas.

Movie Max Digital Cinemas owner Brent Birchfield said the two businesses had not embarked on the initiative to do foodbanks a favour.

‘‘We’ve done it because we feel it’s a necessity.’’
