Community House marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year last Sunday, celebrating the Year of the Rabbit.
Timaru’s Community House celebrated for the first time by decorating the front office with items they were able to source from the local Chinese community.
Community Trust of Mid and South chief executive officer Liz Shea said it was nice to celebrate the occasion.
‘‘It was a brilliant idea, especially as we celebrate and decorate for every other holiday and festival.’’
Multiple Sclerosis Society field worker Fiona Pierce was the one who wanted to decorate for the occasion and helped make the middle panels for the dragon decoration in the reception area.
‘‘We are trying to be a bit more diverse and inclusive,’’ Mrs Pierce said.
Community Trust of Mid and South Community operations coordinator Kathryn Barber said Timaru did not do much in the way of celebrating the Lunar New Year.
‘‘We got people who were coming in and they would ask us about it, and they would want to know more.’’
