Bravery at book’s heart

Ready to read . . . Author Kelly Cooney shows off her first children’s book at Mt Dobson.

A new children’s book that helps them understand their emotions is hitting the shelves of local businesses.

Timaru woman Kelly Cooney has published her first children’s book, the first in the ‘‘Vibe Tribe’’ series.

She said the stories taught children how to experience and move through their emotions in a healthy way.

‘‘Bottling up your emotions is never the right way to go about things.’’

Being Brave at Mount Dobson focuses on teaching children to be brave and to not let their fears get the better of them.

The book follows the story of Marley, a boy from Timaru who cannot wait to go skiing at his favourite skifield. He has challenged himself to ski the steeper slopes, but he is a little bit scared about doing it.

The story has many illustrations that follow the adventure and helps engage with young readers. It is suitable for 3-to 9-year-olds.

There are tips and facts woven throughout the story about processing emotions to help readers and parents, as well as an information section at the end of the book.

Not only is the story New Zealand-based, but so is everything else about the book, including the design, copy and print.

Ten percent of all profits from the Vibe Tribe book series will be donated to outdoor education pursuits in New Zealand primary schools.

The book is available from Farmlands, Bay Hill Books, The Portal, Fairlie Bakehouse, Ski Shack, the Mt Dobson cafe and Kidstuff.
