‘Amazing’ volunteers host Christmas dinner

Christmas spirit . . . With Christmas around the corner, Age Concern South Canterbury’s Friday Club celebrated by holding a traditional Christmas dinner for its members last Friday.

Friday Social Club coordinator Sue Harrex said the team had been hard at work making all the festive food.

‘‘I have the most amazing team of volunteers and every Christmas the Taiko Women’s Institute comes out to help in full force.’’

Celebratory cake . . . Friday Club members Owen Stevens and Corry Moffat cut the cake at the Christmas celebration.

For some people, this was the only time they would get to celebrate Christmas with people as they might not have family in the same city or even the same country, Mrs Harrex said.

‘‘We give them a proper Christmas dinner with hot ham and cold turkey as well as dessert, pavlova and ambrosia.’’

They had been doing this for at least the past decade and catered for about 60 people — and still had enough for leftovers.

‘‘It is an informal get together with lots of talking, and we also draw the raffle and have two members cut the cake.’’
