Ready your karts – the TiMOru Soapbox Derby returns in November.
Registrations for the event open today (Monday, August 12).
Richard Brown, one of the event’s organisers, said entries would be capped, so interested residents were advised to sign up early.
Now in its third year, the derby is held in November to coincide with Movember, an initiative which promotes men’s health, including mental health.
Kart riders race down Timaru’s George St, over a series of jumps.
Various rules have been introduced over past events, including the requirement for adult riders to take on the jumps on the George St track.
This year’s safety addition was roll bars on the open and corporate karts, which would protect the driver’s head if the kart rolled, Mr Brown said.
“Every year the karts are getting faster.”
The soapbox derby has three categories: a junior section, an open section and a corporate category.
Mr Brown encouraged businesses to enter a company kart.
“We’re always keen to get more corporate challenges.”
