Top floral designs to go on show

Blooming red . . . A red-themed table-top display of floral art design.

With all the preparations made, the Timaru Floral Art Group is all ready to host the South Canterbury designer of the year award.

It is Timaru’s turn to host the award, and the public is invited to come along.

This year there are 13 entries in the open class section.

To be able to enter the section, people must have passed exams to show they are qualified.

At peace . . . A sculpture of beautiful calla lilies.

Timaru Floral Art Group president Jan Chambers said the region was lucky to have so many really good floral designers.

‘‘We are hoping for a good turnout on the day.’’

There will be table-top designs on display at the event and they will be judged on the day before prizes are given out about 2.30pm.

The designs do not have to be made entirely out of flowers — they can include other materials such as driftwood and moss.

Round and bound . . . A woven sculpture displays plants and natural materials.

Ms Chambers said the club had only 13 members at present, and it would like to have more people join.

‘‘It’s very hard to get young people interested and it’s hard to encourage people to do it.’’

People did not have to enter competitions if they did not want to.

‘‘It’s really good, it’s a great thing to try and it’s just lovely to have flowers in your own home.’’

The displays will be open to the public this Saturday, September 17, from 1pm to 4pm at the Caroline Bay lounge. There is a $5 entry fee.
