Locals are invited to celebrate the new year by following the parables of the Bible through funky song and dance as Godspell comes to the Playhouse Theatre.
Musical director Catherine Anderson is a new member of the South Canterbury Drama League (SDCL) and said it was exciting to be back doing shows.
‘‘I have not done a show for about six years, so I am glad to be back doing musical directing,’’ she said.
Some of her favourite songs from the musical were We Beseech Thee and Bless The Lord, with all of the songs being performed with a live band.
‘‘My favourite thing so far about the process is getting the singers in with the band and having them come together.
‘‘I have always done shows with a live band, and with a live band they are in the moment and can feed off of the atmosphere created by the show.’’
Director and choreographer Bronwyn Chittock said the SCDL had not had a show with a live band in a long time and wanted to bring Godspell to the stage.
‘‘I was in the cast many years ago and a part of me felt that it was time the SDCL could perform it again.’’
She said despite the biblical overtones of the show, people of all ages should still come along as the songs were enjoyable.
‘‘The show is not just about the Bible, that is not the take away message. I think the takeaway message is to treat others how you want to be treated and be a decent person.’’
Mrs Chittock said the show was fun and lively with lots of movement and singing, and each rehearsal left her with a different song stuck in her head.
‘‘The time frame has been a challenge but the cast has been working well together and I have my fingers crossed that we do not get hit with Covid-19.’’
Godspell will hit the stage from February 1 to February 4 at The Playhouse with tickets available from iticket.co.nz
