Pirate show one to treasure

Avast ye landlubbers . . . Marque Lamont is ready to do some plundering and swashbuckling.

A swashbuckling show is set to hit the South Canterbury stage, just in time for Christmas functions.

Rehearsals are under way for the South Canterbury Drama League’s dinner theatre production of Piraticus Rex: The Pirate King.

The show was written for the drama league by the late Aaron Williams, and it is being dedicated to his expertise and memory.

Aaron Segar is directing, and Marlene Hanson is musical director.

The league’s last dinner theatre was held at least five years ago and Covid›19 restrictions prevented Piraticus Rex from being performed last year.

The show tells the tale of the stormy deep, where the king’s crown is shattered into pieces of six and a quest begins to find them all to fix.

The saga depicts bravery, love, cowardice and piratical cliches, along with sea shanties and songs.

Drama league manager Sharleyne Diamond said it would be the perfect end›of› year function.

‘‘With most of our shows now selling out as people have become more at ease going to public events, people shouldn’t hesitate to get tickets as it’s going to be really good.’’

To complete the experience, a full pirate-themed meal would be provided and groups were encouraged to dress up as pirates and wenches to fully immerse themselves in the production — there would be a prize for best dressed.

The show will run from November 30 to December 3, and December 6 to December 10.

Group bookings open today and close on September 15. Tickets go live to the general public on September 16.
