There are plenty of laughs to be had at the South Canterbury Drama League’s performance of Broadway’s multi award›winning, upbeat musical comedy The Addams Family at the Playhouse.

Directed by Alice Sollis with musical direction by Megan Holden and choreography by Rebecca Rush, The Addams Family promises to be a kooky, fun›filled laugh fest for all ages.

Featuring a family who live in an upside›down world where pain is joy, sad is happy and death and suffering are dreams to aspire to, The Addams Family brings the darkly delightful world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch to spooky and spectacular life.

Marketing manager Jill de Joux said the story was a simple one all families could relate to. Wednesday is growing up and bringing her new boyfriend to meet the parents.

Chaos ensues, however, as meeting the parents turns into quite a performance and nothing about the hopefully ‘‘normal’’ night goes to plan.

“This is a show where you can simply enjoy a heartfelt, family›friendly story and come away feeling great because you’ve had a good laugh at the antics of two families trying so hard to be normal, whatever that may be, and realising in the end, it’s always more wise just to be yourself.”

Real life Timaru couple Victoria Chappell and Cameron Sutcliffe have taken on the challenge of playing the power couple Morticia and Gomez Addams, with support from Julia Hogg as Wednesday, Luke Robb as Uncle Fester, Kirsty Burnett as Grandma and Clayton Murray as Lurch.

Teenagers Ruby Jackson and Kylie Fraser will share the role of Pugsley and the very conservative, mid›west family coming to dinner to meet their son’s new girlfriend are Alice and Mal Beineke, played by Ella Thomas and Mark Lowen respectively. Andrew Blake plays Wednesday’s new boyfriend, Lucas.

The show runs from August 19 to September 3 at The Playhouse in Church St with a themed gala opening night.
