A folk music festival is set to bring Geraldine to life this weekend.

Organiser Rhys Taylor said there would be international and local bands playing through the weekend.

Mr Taylor said one of the bands playing had formed over a fence in Geraldine almost six years ago.

The Neighbours singer Jill Roberts said she and bandmate Craig Workman had met while trimming a large vine along their boundary fence.

Ms Roberts said the unruly vine was creeping over her garage roof.

‘‘As Craig and his wife Paulette worked away from their side — and I from mine — we suddenly had a gap through which we started talking, and Craig mentioned he loved to play piano.’’

The duo decided to catch up one day and practise a few songs together, and that was how their band The Neighbours was born.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the same garden fence they met over served as a way to practise while safely in a bubble.

Before moving to Geraldine, Mr Workman had spent 25 years playing in a folk band in the North Island.

The festival will be held at the Geraldine Performing Arts Academy in Talbot St.

Also playing at the festival will be the Pleasant Pluckers, which Mr Taylor warned not to say too fast.

‘‘Not pheasant pluckers.’’

Along with the performances, there would be chances to get involved in song and music workshops with international musicians Good Habits.
