A vibrant opportunity for people to pick up a can and try their hand at spray paint art is taking place this Saturday in Timaru.
Alive Vibrant Timaru has been adding murals to the town’s heritage buildings, with support from the Timaru Civic Trust, to help blend the old with the new.
Alive Vibrant Timaru team member Ash Ronald said they were hosting the Alive Vibrant Timaru Proving Grounds event to give members of the public a chance to give spray painting a try.
‘‘We are going to have our specially designed container at the event, as well as artists there who can help provide guidance if people want to learn a new skill.’’
The local artists will be painting the walls of surrounding buildings, showcasing spraying as an art form.
Mr Ronald said the event aimed to engage with the community, but also to provide a canvas for artists instead of having them paint under bridges or on trains.
‘‘One artist called Kaos came along to one of our other events and painted the specially designed container, showcasing his skills, and has been commissioned for other works, like the art in the Royal Arcade.
‘‘This is a chance for others to give it a go, for artists to show what they can achieve and it’s a chance to legitimise their artistic talent.’’
He said it had been really nice to see how popular the murals had been with people, and school groups learning about the buildings and seeing the artwork within the CBD.
‘‘It’s about enhancing the town and it’s nice seeing the impact on the community.’’
All the paint is supplied and Mr Ronald said it was just about the public having a go and engaging with them.
The event will take place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, November 5, at the Sophia St car park between Harcourts and Copyfast.
