Five Questions With . . . Olwen Norton Scholarship recipient Rachael Stott. The scholarship, offered through Altrusa International of Timaru, is again open to applicants.

Q What can you tell me about the scholarship?
It was $1500 to be used for tuition fees for retraining or training.
I had been unable to take up study until 2016, as a result of circumstance, which was one of their criteria.

Q Can you tell me a bit about yourself and what you are studying or what you want to study?
In 2015, I decided to go ahead with a long-held dream and commence study in 2016 to become a naturopath.
Due to ongoing financial restraints, it was a tough decision to make.
I have multiple sclerosis and the MS nurse gave me some encouragement to apply for the Altrusa scholarship.
I was fortunate enough to be awarded it for that year.
I am nearing completion of my second year of my studies, with one year to go in my diploma of naturopathy. I am studying through Naturopathic College of New Zealand.

Q How has the scholarship benefited you?
I have been able to apply my new-found knowledge to my own health, and I have gone from strength to strength.
I have gained more confidence as I keep having to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
Having to go up to New Plymouth for workshops has been one of those things. Being without my usual networks has made me realise how well I am, which I am so thankful for.
I have met some amazing students and tutors on my course. I am also so very blessed that I have so far avoided needing a student loan for my course-related costs.

Q What is your advice to people who want to apply?
If you have a passion in life, go for it.

Q What is your ultimate goal now you are on your way to chasing your future career?
I am excited about being able to work as a naturopath in just over a year.
The scholarship is intended for people who plan to study in order to return to the workplace, who plan to retrain for a new career, or who have been unable to study until now. For more information, phone (03) 686-2789 or email: jmbevin102@gmail.com.
