The new Waimate Stadium is set to open within days, its project overseer says.
Warren White, who is the Waimate New Zealand Spring Shears president, told The Courier on Tuesday that the new venue would be open by the end of the week or early next week.
The stadium is set to fill a gap in venues after the Waimate Shears’ former venue – the Waimate Stadium, where the event had been hosted for 40 years – was redeveloped into the new Waimate District Community Complex.
The redevelopment had enabled multiple sport groups and other activities to use the space, but the upgraded facilities meant the building was no longer suited to a shearing competition.
So the new stadium – which will include toilet and shower facilities, a bar area, kitchen, dining room and barbecue area – had been developed.
Mr White told The Courierearlier this month that the new stadium had been a work in progress for about two years.
The fully insulated 900sq m building will be available for a range of groups to use for various purposes.
The first major event in the new venue would be a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Waimate on July 29.
The evening, which would include an auction and Argentinian barbecue, was being held in conjunction with the Southern Canterbury A&P Association and Waimate New Zealand Shears.
Mr White said other events at the venue included a few birthday parties, but he expected the calendar to begin filling up.
“[There have been] a lot of inquiries.”
