Waimate’s Atwill Park is proving a hit with Tao Temuka Scouts and Cubs members.
The group ventured to the park, near Kelcey’s Bush, two weeks ago for one of its regular camps.
Leader Dan Goldie said the three-day trip was made possible by South Canterbury Toyota, which lent the group its community van, and the Central South Island Charity Bike Ride, which lent its covered trailer.
“They are very supportive and good people,” Mr Goldie said.
The children, including 13 cubs and five scouts members, took part in a range of activities, which included exploring a creek and river and toasting marshmallows.
“As well as that, the older ones went on a walk by themselves with radios,” he said.
They hid things along the way and used the radios to help other participants find them.
“It was a little bit like orienteering.”
The group takes part in a camp once a term.
Mr Goldie is the leader for both the scouts and cubs groups, but hopes another leader will soon join the ranks to help keep Tao Temuka Scouts going.
“We have been going without stopping for 107 years .. and we don’t want to see it finish.”
